For Reflection and Preparation

   Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

                                                                                 II Thessalonians 2:16-17

   The gospel of Christ’s apostles is the gospel of God’s free grace, of his undeserved love for sinners in the death of his Son in our place.  ..It is the gospel of God’s sufficient grace.  It cannot be regarded either as a supplement to something else (e.g. Judaism) or as needing to be supplemented by something else (e.g. circumcision), without being undermined.  ..Today people try to add works of a different kind, philanthropy perhaps or religious observance, or a particular ceremony or experience.  In each case it is a ‘Jesus plus’ gospel, which is derogatory to the adequacy of his work.  We need to echo Peter:  ‘We believe it is through the grace of the Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they.’  We and they, Jews and Gentiles, are saved in the same way, through the one and only apostolic gospel of God’s grace.                                                                                             John Stott

Assurance of God’s Grace                        Colossians 1:11-14

    May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.  He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Confessing Our Faith                     The Apostles’ Creed

I Believe in God the Father, Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

Born of the virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, dead, and buried:

He descended into hell;

The third day He arose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,

And sitteth on the right hand of GHood the Father Almighty,

From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I Believe in the Holy Spirit;

The holy catholic church;

The communion of saints,

The forgiveness of sins,

The resurrection of the body;

And the life everlasting.  Amen.
